About Janmashtami

Krishna states in BG 4.9: "One who knows the transcendental nature of My appearance and activities does not upon leaving the body, take his birth again in this material world, but attains My eternal abode, O Arjuna."

5000 years ago, when Lord Krishna appeared on this earth the astrological influence of the star known as Rohini was predominant because this star is considered to be very auspicious. At that time, in all directions, east, west, south, north, everywhere, there was an atmosphere of peace and prosperity. When things were adjusted like this, Lord Vishnu, who is residing within the heart of every living entity, appeared in the darkness of night as the Supreme Personality of Godhead before Devaki, who also appeared as one of the demigoddesses. The appearance of Lord Vishnu at that time could be compared to the full moon in the sky as it rises on the eastern horizon.
Vasudeva, Krishna's father, saw that wonderful child born as a baby with four hands, holding conchshell, club, disc and lotus flower, decorated with the mark of Srivatsa, wearing the jeweled necklace of Kaustubha stone, dressed in yellow silk, appearing dazzling like a bright blackish cloud, wearing a helmet bedecked with the Vaidurya stone, valuable bracelets, earrings and similar other ornaments all over His body and an abundance of hair on His head. Then in the presence of His father and mother, the Lord turned Himself into an ordinary child.
Janmashtami is the yearly celebration of Lord Krishna's appearance as the Cowherd Boy of Vraja. In His bluish, two-armed form, Sri Krishna delights Mother Yasoda, Father Nanda, the cows and cowherd boys, and all the residents of Vrndavan. Wishing to return back home to Godhead with Krishna in his eternal abode, Vaishnavas celebrate Janmashtami as the major festival of the year. Observed in late August or early September, the devotees fast until midnight, which is the hour of the Lord's appearance. In temples, a great feast is offered, typically featuring 108 or more opulent preparations for the Lord's pleasure.

Message by ISKCON Delhi Temple President
Dear Friends,

Hare Krishna!

It is with great pleasure that we invite you to the fifth annual celebrations of Sri Krishna Janmashtami at Gurgaon on 18th August 2014. Janmashtami Celebrations, last year, were a grand success with the blessings of Lord Krishna and with the support of senior vaishnavas and inumerable dedicated devotees.

yadā yadā hi dharmasya glānir bhavati bhārata, abhyutthānam adharmasya tadātmānaḿ sṛjāmyaham

This popular shloka-4.7 from Bhagavad Gita As It Is, indicates that in this day and age of quarrel and hypocrisy where immorality and irreligion prevail, the Lord, out of compassion, manifests Himself.

When we celebrate Janmashtami, it is with a sense of humility and surrender that we receive His Lordship, asking Him to show us the way, deliver us and help us to re-establish the principles of religion.

On behalf of ISKCON, we request yopu to participate in these most auspicious and grand festivities, along with your family and friends.

With best wishes in service of the Vaishnavas.

Quote of the Day

In the beginning there may be some failures. That is quite natural. Just as a child is trying to stand, he may be fall down. But that does not mean he should give up the idea. Go on. A time will come when he will be perfect. A time will come when you'll be perfect, Krishna conscious.- Los Angeles, 1969
